BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey are calling for the appointment of an independent prosecutor to investigate possible ties between President Donald Trump and Russia following Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

Warren tweeted out Tuesday “we need a real, independent prosecutor” and Trump shouldn’t pick the person to conduct that investigation.

The Massachusetts Democrat also said that while “there’s no question that Comey made questionable decisions during the election,” it was hard to believe Trump had fired the top person investigating his ties to Russia because he was unfair to Hillary Clinton.

Markey, a fellow Democrat, called Comey’s firing “a deeply alarming precedent” that is sending the country “careening ever closer to a Constitutional crisis.”

Markey also said Comey’s firing underscores the need for a special prosecutor.
