BOURNE – The community came out in a big way this weekend to support American troops overseas.

The annual Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops care package filling drive was held at the Trowbridge Tavern in Bourne on Saturday and Sunday. Hundreds of volunteers helped fill about 1,500 care packages for service members currently stationed overseas.

“It was amazing,” said event organizer Michelle DaSilva. “We had people of all ages, young children to older veterans, and it just a great atmosphere to get together and spend time with people that were so excited to be putting care packages together for our military.”

The packages are mailed out during the holiday season.

“Most people that I talked to said this was actually truly the meaning of Christmas, this is what Christmas is supposed to be about,” DaSilva said. “I think they all felt this was a great opportunity to do something that mattered.”

The care packages include Christmas cards, coffee, drinks, food, and general foods.

Organizers received a record number of requests this year, about 1,700. DaSilva attributes the increased care package demand to some broken supply lines. She said that troops are reporting more and more of how difficult it can be to secure goods on a regular basis.

DaSilva says they hope to get the additional 200 packages mailed out over the course of the next few weeks.
