Volunteers to Place 57,000 American Flags on Soldiers Graves in Bourne

AmericanFlagBOURNE – About 57,000 American flags will be placed this weekend at the Massachusetts National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne.

Operation Flags for Vets is a semi-annual event where volunteers place flags at the graves of veterans. The stars and stripes are placed for Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

“It’s extremely heartwarming to see what’s done and to see [people] come out and honor our veterans as they should be honored,” said organizer Paul Monti, who  lost his son Jared in Afghanistan. “It’s become a great tradition with some people; we have entire families that come and place flags. It’s just such a wonderful thing to see,” Monti added.

Monti said they are looking for volunteers to help place the flags throughout the cemetery. The event kicks off at 10 AM on Saturday.
