HYANNIS – A line of severe thunderstorms packed with strong winds, lightning and heavy rain hammered Cape Cod Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Barnstable County at 7:15 a.m. that was in effect for an hour.

The warning indicated that the storm had the potential to produce damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

There were dozens of reports trees and power lines down on Cape Cod. The National Weather Service received a report of 30 to 40 trees down in a one square mile area of Bourne in the vicinity of Shore Rd. and Beach St.

According to Eversource, more than 12,000 electric customers lost power at one point as a result of the storm.

Eversource Spokeswoman Rhiannon D’Angelo said that this storm brought typical results.

“Trees are the number 1 cause of power outages, so we expect this type of thing to happen when this caliber storm rolls through the area,” she said.

A peak wind gust of 63 mph was recorded in Barnstable, while multiple trees were reported down in Plymouth.

Mashpee firefighters responded to reports of a roof that caught on fire. It was unclear if it was the result of a lightning strike. In Brewster, a kayaker who had been reported missing off Ellis Landing Rd. was found safe on shore.

A chimney on a Sagamore Beach home was struck by lightning, but there were no injuries.
