WELLFLEET – A ceremony was held Wednesday to celebrate the official start of renovations to the Wellfleet Police Station.

Voters approved the $7.5 million overhaul at town meeting and town election in November.

Police Chief Ronald Fisette says the temporary structure, which will house the department for about 12 to 13 months, is still being finished.

“Our current facility does not house us appropriately,” Fisette said. “We don’t have the right equipment. We don’t have the right interview rooms. Our offices are coming apart. There are a lot of structural issues going on.”

The temporary station will be located up the hill from the current building across from the Wellfleet Elementary School.

Fisette thanked the residents in the town for recognizing the needs of the department and addressing them.

“We are very excited that the town’s supporting us and looking forward to this,” Fisette said.

The renovations will increase real estate taxes by about $119 annually.
