West Barnstable Gets New Deputy Chief

west barn fireWEST BARNSTABLE – The West Barnstable Fire Department has hired its first ever full-time Deputy Fire Chief.

West Barnstable Fire Chief Joseph Maruca has tapped West Barnstable Fire Captain David Paananen to serve as his deputy.

Paananen is a 20-plus year veteran of the staff, starting out as a volunteer firefighter and working his way up the ranks.

Maruca said the fire department received a federal grant of over $250,000 to cover all the costs of the new job for the next two years.

He said that gives the department three years to phase in funding for the position.

The department operates with about 50 staff, nearly all of those working on a volunteer basis.
