With Winter’s Arrival, Insurance Experts Offer Advice

HYANNIS – With winter arriving in full force this weekend, insurance experts say it’s important to make sure your home is protected from the elements.

Rogers & Gray President and CEO David Robinson said you need to think logically about how to mitigate the risk.

“The first would be if snow accumulates on your roof, make sure you have a snow rake to take that snow off. What that’s going to do is prevent ice damming,” said Robinson.

He also suggested having a friend or property manager check on your home if you’re away for an extended period of time.

Keeping access points into your house clear of snow and ice is also important for insurance and safety purposes.

“Certainly keep your walkways clear to avoid slips and falls. In the situation of an unoccupied home, make sure that your heat is up to avoid any freezing,” Robinson said.

He also said that any type of water damage from a frozen pipe will likely be covered by your homeowners insurance policy.
