WASHINGTON – A local Gold Star family will spend their Memorial Day in Washington with President Trump as they honor their son who was killed in action 8 years ago.

The Xiarhos family from Yarmouth will join the President and other Gold Star families for the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. Steven Xiarhos, the Deputy Chief of Police in Yarmouth, will remember his son Nick, who died in Afghanistan in 2009.

“It’s an honor for Nick,” Xiarhos said. “Nick’s loss has let us do amazing things for others and we’re hoping by meeting the President and his wife and others that we can help spread that message of sacrifice, especially on Memorial Day.”

White House officials reached out to the Xiarhos family on Friday to invite them to the ceremony.

“We had the choice of staying here on the Cape, but we also have, now, this incredible opportunity to be in Washington, our nation’s capital, at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day as a guest of the President. We thought that was an honor and we’re going to make that happen,” Xiarhos said.

“For us, it’s still hard to accept that our 21 year old son and brother is no longer here, but maybe he’s making all this happen,” Xiarhos added.
