Yarmouth Approves Restaurant Grading System with Changes Requested by Business Owners

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Board of Health has voted to require inspectors to grade restaurants on their cleanliness, but those grades won’t be posted publicly at the restaurants at the request of business owners.

The Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce had opposed that proposal, but did not object to the scores being available to the public online:

“We’re very transparent about what happens here at our restaurants in Yarmouth so we were happy that they did hear our voice that, for now, we will be posting [the grades] online and not posting it at the entrances to our businesses,” said Mary Vilbon, the Executive Director of the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce.

The cleanliness scores will be similar to academic grades, with 90 to 100 garnering an A, 80 to 89 garnering a B, and so on.

Many businesses were worried that scores lower than 100 would turn patrons away, according to Vilbon.

“That was the majority of voices that we did hear from the businesses. We’re glad that the Board of Health did take the steps that they did.”

The Board voted 3-1 in favor of the plan, which is similar to the scoring system used in Barnstable.
