Yarmouth Raises Age To Buy Tobacco

tobaccoYARMOUTH – Beginning July 1st, the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in the town of Yarmouth will be raised from 18 to 21.

Two recent hearings were held on the matter before the Yarmouth Board of Health voted to raise the minimum age by a 3-2 decision.

Convenience store owners expressed their opposition to the plan, according Yarmouth Director of Health Bruce Murphy. But, he said, other towns will likely follow Yarmouth’s lead.

The Town of Barnstable is considering raising the minimum age for tobacco purchases, Murphy said.

Yarmouth is the first town on the Cape to raise the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 21. They are the 15th town in the commonwealth to enact the law.
