YARMOUTH – Plans to build a pavilion with restrooms at Packet Landing Park in Yarmouth were criticized by selectmen last month.

The cost estimates for the project have come in around $500,000 even though the site already has a septic system that could handle the proposed restrooms.

Original plans called for a historical accurate replica of the Cellar House with meeting rooms, office space and restrooms but was voted down at town meeting.

Yarmouth’s Community and Economic Development Committee tasked an architect with coming up with ideas which included the pavilion with a roof and restrooms.

An application for Community Preservation Act funds was submitted in September which was well received by the Community Preservation Committee, according to Town Planner Kathy Williams.

“People were very interested in getting this park completed and to see something actually done and to be that nice gateway for Yarmouth,” Williams said.

Williams said the structure would complete the park and provide recreational opportunities.

Selectman Erik Tolley says the plan would not make it through town meeting.

“I think if you went to town meeting with a half million dollar pavilion you would get laughed off of the floor,” he said.

Selectman Tracy Post believes the structure would be a nice addition to the park and the restrooms would be welcomed by the charter boats in the area but said the cost is just too high.

“I can’t wrap my mind around $500,000 for this structure,” she said. “I just can’t.”
