YARMOUTH – Columbus Day Weekend is here and that means Yarmouth will celebrate with the annual Seaside Festival.

The 38th installment of the event will be held at Joshua Sears Memorial Field beginning Saturday and will feature more than 125 crafters, musical entertainment, children activities and the return of the Seaside Parade on Sunday.

“We hope that the community pitches in and shows their support by entering floats or marching units,” said event founder and board member Jan Butler. “It looks like it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”

The parade was taken out of the festival last year due to a lack of funding.

Butler started the festival in 1978 with the hope of creating community spirit and pride in Yarmouth.

The event is made possible by the work of a small, volunteer committee.

“This is put on solely by approximately 16 volunteers,” Butler said. “We’re a family. We have fun planning it. We love our town. We care about our families and we love to celebrate.”

Buter said the most enjoyable thing about the festival for her is seeing families having fun.

“I love to see kids that grew up with my children return with their children,” she said.

Other featured events include the Seaside Roadrace and fireworks display on Sunday and the Canoe/Kayak Race from Wilbur Park to Smuggler’s Beach on Columbus Day.

Saturday events include the Racing of the Beds and the Pie Eating Contest.

“It’s just a fun, old-fashioned, no politicals – kind of a warm community feel,” Butler said.
