HYANNIS — Thank you, Lindsey Phelan.
That was the general consensus of the Barnstable High School girls hockey team (2-0-1) Wednesday afternoon as it left the ice and headed to the locker room with a 3-3 tie against Duxbury.

Things were looking fairly bleak for the host Red Raiders as the clock ticked down near the end of the third period, behind the visiting Green Dragons, 3-2. But with just under 3:00 left in the game, Phelan, a senior forward, took the puck at mid-ice and stormed down the middle being hacked and clawed most of the way by a pair of Duxbury defenders. Phelan outskated them both and drilled the puck past Cat Jordan (13 saves) to make it an even 3-3 with just 2:29 to go. Barnstable junior forwards Amanda Picknick and Caroline Spalt were both credited with an assist on the play.
But it was Duxbury that gained the upper hand from the outset, scoring just 0:22 seconds into the first period on a goal from starting center Marissa Fichter, assisted by Jane Dudley, that made it 1-0.
Still, it took Barnstable just 0:41 seconds to come back and tie the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Brynn Mendes took a Callie Rogorzenski pass and put it in the back of the net. The score remained deadlocked at 1- 1 after the first period. It almost remained that same score through the entire second period as well, if not for some serious penalty killing on behalf of the hosts. Barnstable sustained six penalties in all for the day, three in the first period, two in the second and one in the third.
“I thought we were the better team five-on-five, you know?” head coach Pete Nugnes said after the game. “But we couldn’t seem to stay out of the penalty box. I was enjoying it when we were five-on-five… our team played a little bit undisciplined and we have to work on that. It’s only our third game of the season but we’ll get better at that.”
Nevertheless, it was Rogorzenski who came to the rescue with just 0:22 left in the 2nd frame. Tied 1-1 and time almost gone, Rogorzenski took a slap shot off a Meghan Moore pass and found the net to make it 2-1.

But with the second period over less than a half minute later, the joy of “Rogo’s” goal quickly dissipated as Duxbury’s Fichter rifled one into the top corner past freshman goalie Olivia Sollows to make it an even 2-2. Nearly three minutes later (12:00), Phelan would got to the penalty box for a third time and Duxbury’s Kelly McCarthy would suck the wind out of the Hyannis Youth and Community Center when she took a Payton Donato rebound off Sollows’ pads and snuck it in on the power play to make it 3-2. Dudley also got an assist on the play.
“We do have a really good penalty kill, but against a team like Duxbury you can’t take penalties like that and it’s frustrating,” Nugnes said.
More than two-thirds of the third period elapsed when Phelan took the puck down center ice and befuddled Duxbury’s netminder, Jordan for the tying goal (2:29).
Barnstable’s game for Saturday against Hingham has been changed to Monday, January 5 at 6:00 pm at Hingham.
Sollows took on 29 shots and made 26 saves in a nevertheless rock-solid effort. Barnstable had just 16 shots in contrast with its guest Green Dragons.
