Barnstable Swim Teams Sweep Vineyarders

WEST BARNSTABLE  – There is strength, they say, in numbers.

Buoyed by a roster of 52 varsity swimmers – 33 girls and 19 boys – Barnstable High School defeated visiting Martha’s Vineyard last night by the respective scores of 108-39 (boys) and

114-32 (girls) in both teams’ 2014-15 season opener at the YMCA on Route 132. The Barnstable boys’ and girls’ teams are now both 1-0 on the heels of a 3rd place overall finish in Sunday’s 9th Annual Cape Cod Classic Invitational on Nantucket.

“It was a good win,” head coach Dan Wareham said after the meet. “But we have the numbers and we fill the lanes.”

The dynamic duo of Red Raider junior boys swimmer Alex Damiecki and freshman Caroline Ells – who both qualified for states at the Classic – qualified for two more events versus the Vineyard yesterday and have now combined for five different events in the state individual championships in less than 48 hours.

Damiecki, already a Barnstable High boys swim captain as a junior, captured Cape Classic Boys Swimmer of the Meet award after first place finishes in the 100 butterfly (53.41 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2:04.84). Both of the swimmer’s times qualified him for the state individual championships. Damiecki followed those two spectacular times by anchoring Red Raiders’ 200 medley relay team to a first place finish and in so doing qualified for a third state championship bid later on this season.

In the Red Raiders’ victory over the Vineyard yesterday, Damiecki qualified again for states with individual victories in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while Barnstable senior captain Liam Russo qualified for states in the 100 backstroke.

Damiecki paved the way for the win over the Vineyarders with those two first place finishes in individual events and with his contribution to the Red Raider 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams that also took first place finishes.

Barnstable senior captain Connor Rogan, who was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay team and 400 free relay team, set a personal best mark in the 50 freestyle and took second place. Barnstable junior Tim DeCosta also set personal bests yesterday in each event he competed in. Other notable finishes for the Red Raiders included senior Ben Ahajjam in the 100 breaststroke (1st place) and sophomore Mitchell Langfield who took a second place with one of his personal best times.

Led by 14-year-old freshman Caroline Ells, the perennially top-ranked Barnstable girls also turned in a dominating performance in defeating the Vineyarders yesterday, 114-32. Ells, who qualified for the state individual championships on Nantucket on Sunday in two events, captured another pair of first-place finishes versus the Vineyard last night and in so doing raised her total to four state-qualifying times in just two days.

As if Ells’ performance wasn’t enough, Barnstable 8th grader Hannah Geoffrion won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Butterfly with a personal best time in the butterfly. Senior captain Grace Boudreau and freshman Molly Autery also set personal best times in the 200 freestyle, scoring valuable points for the Red & White. Freshman Maeve Hickey and 8th grader Sarah Stergis–Cox added onto that by setting personal bests in the 50 freestyle. Other notable finishes came from sophomore Grace Kilroy in the 100 freestyle (personal best), senior Kylie Sheehan and frosh Isabelle Woods who took first and second place, respectively, in the 100 Backstroke. Woods set a personal best with her second place finish.
