Sandwich native Jared Zaniewski (Bishop Stang Class of 2014) was named last month a captain for the 2015 UMass-Lowell River Hawks men’s lacrosse team. He is only a freshman. Zaniewski starred not only at Bishop Stang but also for Cape Cod Lacrosse each summer under the tutelage of former Barnstable High School head coach Greg Clements. Zaniewski was an Eastern Athletic Conference All-Star, Southcoast Varsity Conference All-Star and Dual County League All-Star and was named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic Team and Southeast Mass. Region Interscholastic All-Star team in his high school career. He is the son of Ellen and Ed Zaniewski of Sandwich.

2014 Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School graduate Spencer Tyler, who quarterbacked the Dolphins to the MIAA Div. 4 Super Bowl in 2013, recently completed an excellent freshman season for the Curry College Colonels in Milton, MA. The rookie QB played in seven games for Curry this past fall, completing 104 of 194 pass attempts for 894 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 127.7 yards passing per game to lead the Colonels’ backfield, threw seven interceptions and rushed for one touchdown.

A pair of other Cape Codders also suited up for the Curry College Colonels football team this fall, including North Falmouth native Jack O’Rourke, a 2014 Falmouth High School graduate and a freshman defensive back and 2014 Pope John Paul II graduate Steve Grogan, a freshman linebacker who hails from Forestdale.

2010 Bourne High School graduate Matt Beauregard, who then matriculated to Cushing Academy and went to Missouri State as an outside linebacker but then transferred to Assumption College in Worcester, recently wrapped up his collegiate football career for the Assumption Greyhounds. A senior organizational communications major, Beauregard transferred to Assumption from Missouri State in 2011 and he played four seasons for the Greyhounds in Worcester, MA. The greyhounds finished at 7-4 this season. Beauregard was a three-year starter and four-year letterman at Bourne High for Coach Carl Armstrong as a fullback and inside linebacker. He was team MVP, team captain and SCC All-Star as a senior in 2009, starting both ways, and recorded 98 tackles, 9 sacks and 4 interceptions, while tallying 850 rushing yards for 8 TDs. He also lettered for three years in lacrosse playing for the Canalmen. He is the son of Ronald and Marilyn Beauregard of Bourne.

2013 Nauset Regional High School graduate Molly Crowell finished a spectacular freshman track season running for Vassar College earlier this year and is primed to make an even bigger name for herself come this spring. Crowell made her collegiate debut at the Willie Williams Classic, where she ran 26.86 in the 200m followed by a 2:30.26 time in her collegiate 800m debut at the RPI Invitational. She helped the 4x400m relay set a championship record at Liberty Leagues with a time of 4:00.35, garnering First Team All-League honors as a freshman and she ran on the 4x400m relay at the Penn Relays, helping the squad to a time of 3:54.68. Crowell also ran a personal best time of 26.62(w) at the Yale Springtime Invitational and placed second in the 400m at the Vassar Twilight meet with a time of 59.25, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships.

Nauset Regional High School graduate Zach Altneu finished a season of perfection for the Hamilton College football team this fall, going 3-3 on field goal attempts and 13-13 on PAT kicks. Altneu is a collegiate freshman.

Skidmore College field hockey star Tori Eldridge was named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team this fall after another fine season for the Thoroughbreds. Eldridge is a collegiate junior and a native of Brewster. She graduated from Nauset Regional High School in 2012.

Skidmore College field hockey star senior forward Melanie Webb just wrapped up a fine collegiate career this fall for the Thoroughbreds after starting all 22 games. Webb tied for second on the team with 11 assists and ranked second in the conference while finishing third with 13 goals and 37 points. All totaled, Webb tallied three game-winning goals and produced six points (2G, 2A) in games against Cortland, New Paltz and Union. She scored her first career game-winning goal against New Paltz. Webb was a 2011 Boston Globe All-Scholastic and ACL All-Star for the Sandwich High Blue Knights.

Former Nauset Regional High School football all-star and defensive back Derrick Holmes just completed a fine rookie season at the University of Rhode Island, getting his first varsity start on special teams versus Fordham University and gaining playing time versus Central Connecticut and Albany. Holmes attended the Hargrave Military Academy before matriculating to URI to play football. He hails from Brewster. Derrick’s brother Nathan Holmes, who holds he rushing touchdowns record at Nauset (24) is also listed on the URI roster and is a fullback.

Tori Eldridge was named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team this fall, playing field hockey for Skidmore.

Nauset Regional High School graduate and Warriors tennis standout Nick Majewski is a sophomore on the Merrimack tennis squad and has had a fine collegiate career thus far. The son of Robert and Vickie Majewski of Brewster, Nick was named last season to the Northeast-10 All-Conference First and Second Team and finished the season with an overall record of 11-9 in singles and a 14-10 record in doubles. He posted a 6-7 record at No. 6 singles as well as 4-2 record at No. 5 singles and recorded an 8-1 conference record in doubles while posting a 12-9 record at No. 3 doubles.

Former Barnstable High School star lacrosse player Dylan Lahey is busy preparing for his senior season at Hamilton College in upstate New York. The defenseman started in all but two of Hamilton’s games last season and was previously a 2013 all-conference player. Lahey helped lead Barnstable to a 2010 Maritime League championship title his senior year. He hails from Hyannis.
