D-Y Sweeps Nauset at Reggie Lewis

ROXBURY — The strong just keep getting stronger, as they say.

The Dennis-Yarmouth girls and boys indoor track teams took home a pair of Atlantic Coast League victories Tuesday night, sweeping the Nauset Regional High School warriors by the respective scores of 56-44 and 79-10 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

The still undefeated Dolphins’ girls squad (5-0) was paced by its perennial star performer, Madison Pawlina, who captured first place finishes in three events, including the 55-meter dash and the 300-meter dash with a time of 43.90.

The Dolphins’ Olivia Miller ran a personal best in the 55-meter hurdles and took first place with her time of 9.58, while junior Jackie Hovey took a key third place in the same event. D-Y’s Sydney McCann ran a personal best in the mile at 5:39 and Carly Coughlin finished at 1:48.33 in the 600-meter race, good enough for third place. The Dolphins’ Nicole Gallagher finished in fourth place (2:05.30) while Nauset’s Allison Burns captured first place at 1:45.57.

The D-Y boys, now 3-1,  fully dominated their Nauset opponents, taking 11 out of 12 first place finishes.

Senior Padar Angelone took a first place finish in the mile (5:45.31) with Kyle Rogers coming close behind in second place (5:59.78).

The most impressive time, D-Y boys’ head coach Tom Lonergan said, likely came during the 600-meter race. Hiroto Watanabe turned in a first-place finish with a time of 1:25.28.

“That’s very, very fast,” Lonergan said.

Ryan Powell and Randy La took second and third-place finishes, respectively, with times of 1:44.25 and 1:55.68.

In the boys’ 1000-meter race, Nauset’s Jordan Dash captured first place with a time of 2:57.66, followed by fellow Warrior Brian Brooks in second place at 2:58.04 and D-Y’s Max Allen in third place at 3:02.73. Nauset earned eight of its 10 points in that competition.

In the 300-meter dash, Dennis-Yarmouth’s Arun Ranbhadjan came in first place at 40.27 seconds, with DeAndre Bennett in second place at 40.39. Dan Robles took third place at 41.76.

The Dolphins’ Kyle Rogers was the sole competitor for either team to run in the two-mile event, finishing in first place at 12:32.86.

In the 55-meter dash, senior all-state quarterback Mike Dunn ran a blazing 6.88 seconds for first place, followed by Robles in second place (7.63) and La in third place (7.71).

In the high jump, Dennis-Yarmouth took first with Ranbhadjan’s leap of 5’7″ while Ryan Giffee jumped at 5’3″ for second place.

It was Dunn again in the long jump at 18’11” (first place), Ranbhadjan in a close second at 18’10.25″ and Nauset’s Xavian Reynolds in third place (14’4″).

Dunn made it a perfect trifecta with his first place finish in the shotput, turning in a first place throw of 40’3.75″. Fellow Dolphin gridiron star Chip Evangelista took second place with a throw of 33’7″ and Bennett took third at 32’7″.

Dennis-Yarmouth was disqualified in the 4×200 relay (dropped baton), but Nauset did not pick up key points in that event because it did not field a relay team, Lonergan said.

The Dolphins’ rounded off the day with a first place finish in the 4×400 relay, with Giffee, Max Parent, Max Allen and Ryan Powell combining for a time of 4:09.78.
