Greater New Bedford Voke Too Much for Falmouth Academy Girls

TAUNTON – It was a glorious run.

The Falmouth Academy girls’ basketball team finished its season at 19-4 last night at Taunton High School, as the Mariners fell to the Greater New Bedford Voke Lady Bears, 68-40, in the MIAA Division 4 South Sectional semifinals.

This was the first season that Falmouth Academy had participated in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and it finished as the co-champions of the Cape & Islands League along with St. John Paul II.

Freshman phenom Kendall Currence, who had to be helped off the court near the end of the fourth quarter after rolling her ankle, turned in one of her most exceptional offensive performances of the season to help keep the Mariners’ heads above water as Voke’s deep bench, size and shooting skills proved too much to handle. Greater New Bedford Voke is now 24-0 on the season as it heads to the Division 4 South Sectional championship later this week.

Currence, who scored her team’s sole basket in a 17-3 first quarter, lit it up in the second quarter and helped Falmouth Academy come all the way back from a 24-5 deficit. She scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the second frame and she was joined by fellow frosh Jane Earley who had six of her 10 points in the second stanza as well.

The Mariners whittled away at the Lady Bears’ lead until the score was 28-23 with just under two minutes to go in the second quarter. Unfortunately, a rapid-fire succession of foul calls as the half started to come to a close not only put the Mariners in some foul trouble, but it snatched away the girls’ momentum as Voke quickly went back up by the halftime score of 31-23.

Falmouth Academy outscored Greater New Bedford, 20-14 in the second frame.

But the third quarter would prove different as the Lady Bears built their advantage back up by 17 points at the end of the third quarter, 52-35.

Greater New Bedford Voke’s Iris Rivera scored a team-high 20 points on the night and Lindsey Ramos and Mikayla Roderick each chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
