Hill Shatters Mass. Maritime 400-Meter Hurdles Record

FITCHBURG — Massachusetts Maritime senior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) broke his own school record while qualifying for Division III New Englands in the 400 meter hurdles as Massachusetts Maritime finished fifth overall in both the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships that took place Saturday afternoon at Fitchburg State’s Elliot Field.

Hill posted a fourth place time of 57.49 in his event and also teamed with senior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.), sophomore Luke Kurelja (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and freshman Alan Provost (Monson, Mass.) for a fourth place finishing time in the men’s 4 x 400 relay of 3:36.56. Senior Zach Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded a fourth place performance in the discus with a mark of 40.22 meters (131 feet, 11 inches) for the Buccaneers, who also received a fifth place finish from junior Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) in the hammer throw with a mark of 39.76 meters (130 feet, 5 inches). The quartet of senior Anthony Downs (West Roxbury, Mass.), sophomores Andrew Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.) and Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.) as well as freshman Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.), posted a fifth place time in the 4 x 800 relay of 9:29.54 for Massachusetts Maritime, as Westfield State took top honors in the team competition with a score of 219.50 points to top runner-up Bridgewater State by 20 points in the final standings.

Freshman Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) qualified for Division III New Englands in the women’s shot put with a mark of 11.05 meters (36 feet, 3 inches) for the Buccaneers, while sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) recorded a fifth place finish in the javelin with a mark of 33.05 meters (108 feet, 5 inches). Worcester State and Bridgewater State tied for the team title in the women’s competition with 186 points, while Westfield State was third with 161 points.

Hill, Poh, Gratzer and senior E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) will represent Massachusetts Maritime in competition next Saturday morning at the 2015 New England Division III Championships hosted by MIT in Cambridge, Mass. beginning at 10:00 a.m.
