Nantucket Hoop Girls Outshine Sturgis East

HYANNIS — Sometimes you just have those days.

In spite of what head coach Ted Pappas termed a “good week in practice,” the host Sturgis East (0-2) girls basketball team fell to the visiting Nantucket Whalers, 46-25, last night at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

“Nantucket did the things they needed to do to win,” Pappas said. “We beat ourselves. We couldn’t find a basket.”

That point was driven home in the first half when Nantucket went to the halftime intermission leading the Storm, 28-5.

Sturgis East did, however, turn things up a notch considerably in the second half with better ball movement and rhythm on the floor.

“When we got into the transition game, that was when we were at our best,” Pappas said.

Senior captain Meaghan Fitzgerald – who hover around 200 points from reaching a career 1,000 points – led with 12 points to match Nantucket’s Brianna Cook. Lizzie Thayer and Jodelen Harola 10 and 8 points, respectively, for the visiting Whaler five.

Sturgis East now falls to 0-2 on the season while Nantucket (1-1) picked up its first win of the season.

Sturgis East sophomore guard Caroline Sullivan finished with three points as did senior captain Emma Nemes and Maggie Randall. Zoe Wright and Lauren Estep each had two points for the Storm.

Nantucket ran a strong halfcourt trap defense while Sturgis East played a 2-3 zone for most of the night, according to Pappas.

“We had our fair share of turnovers and lost balls,” Pappas said. “But I thought we did a good job with their press.”
