Smeltzer Tosses No-No for Hyannis over Harwich Mariners (Video)

HARWICH – Florida Gulf Coast southpaw Devin Smeltzer was the personification of efficiency and then some Saturday night at BFC Whitehouse Field as he turned in the season’s first complete-game no-hitter for the first-place Hyannis Harbor Hawks (8-3) in a 5-0 win over host Harwich.

Smeltzer walked just one while striking out four for the complete-game masterpiece and he is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.23 earned run average.

Ole Miss shortstop Errol Robinson – the Hyannis Harbor Hawks’ leadoff hitter – went 3-4 with one RBI on the night and scored the only run Smeltzer needed for the no-no. Robinson singled to lead off the third inning and scored on an Austin Hays (Jacksonville) basehit to make it 1-0. The Harbor Hawks tacked on another four runs with two in the seventh and another two in the eighth inning.

Orleans Continues its Grip on First Place in the East

Tied with Falmouth 1-1, USC’s Reggie Southall (2-3) singled to lead off the Firebirds in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday night at Eldredge Park and then eventually came home on a Kyle Lewis (Mercer) basehit for a 2-1 lead that the hosts would not relinquish.

Orleans’ leadoff man Austin Miller (Loyola Marymount) also went 2-3 for Orleans while Lewis finished 1-3 with one RBI. Alex Call (Ball State) went 1-2 with one RBI for Orleans as well.

Corbin Burnes (Saint Mary) got the win for the Firebirds with five innings of work and four strikeouts.

Brewster Whitecaps Relentless with Bats in Win over Cotuit

The Brewster Whitecaps belted out 17 hits and played flawless defense Saturday night at Stony Brook Field en route to a 16-6 rout over the visiting Cotuit Kettleers.

Colin Lyman (Louisville) went 4-5, Nick Senzel Tennesee) went 3-5 with one RBI to account for seven of those 17 hits, but Robbie Tenerowicz (Cal-Berkeley) went 2-3 with three RBI and Jack Meggs (Washington) went 2-4 with two RBI to punctuate the offensive damage.
