COASTSWEEP Beach Cleanup Heads to Harwich

HARWICH – The COASTSWEEP beach cleanup program across the state is well underway and volunteers are still welcome to join the effort to tidy up Cape Cod.

Last year in Massachusetts over 2,600 volunteers cleaned 146 miles of coastline, river bank, marsh, seafloor and lakeshore and collected more than 12,500 pounds of debris.

The Harwich Conservation Trust and the Harwich Natural Resources Department will be cleaning up the town’s beaches on Saturday, October 22 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers will meet at the Saquatucket Harbor parking lot and will branch out to the beaches across town.

Attendees are asked to dress accordingly for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring a pair of gloves. Trash bags and some gloves will be provided.

The event will be canceled if the day brings rain.

In the last few years, locally, about 30 volunteers have helped to clean the shores of Harwich along Nantucket Sound and Pleasant Bay, removing hundreds of pounds of trash.

Other beach cleanups remaining on the Cape are Wellfleet Harbor Beaches on Monday, October 10, Town Neck Beach in Sandwich on Saturday, October 15 and South Cape Beach and Popponsset Spit in Mashpee on October, 22.
