Homeowner’s Headquarters: A Discussion with Encore Construction on Remodeling

Welcome to Homeowner’s Headquarters, brought to you by the good folks at Mid-Cape Home Centers.

Each week, we will have a discussion with a builder on Cape Cod to talk about what they do, where to find them and the processes involved. Listen to our chat below, read the article and check out more information on Encore Construction.

Kathy DeMeyer, General Manager and owner of Encore Construction in Dennis, met with a potential client recently, who was referred to Encore by another client. The potential client told her that the referring client said there are two things she could rely on with Encore. First, she could definitely trust Encore to do what they say they’re going to do and, second, to rest assured that they will show up when they say they’re going to show up.

Trust and reliability in any industry is crucial but, in the building and remodeling industry, it’s the lifeblood of the entire operation. If a client can’t depend on you, there are a half dozen other companies nearby that will be happy to snap up your business. That’s why Encore Construction has made a name for itself as a company that will do the job right, and be there for the client.

Remodeling is big business right now, DeMeyer said, and Encore is always in for the long haul, no matter how long (or short) that may be.

“Sometimes (the client) might want to do master bath renovations, or a master suite and bath renovation. That’s a very popular renovation lately,” she said. “Kitchens are always very popular. As people buy a home on the Cape, and say ‘This is going to be my forever home,’ they look down the road to what they can do this year, next year, etc. If it’s a bigger renovation, they often try to do it in phases.”

At this point, she added, the team at Encore tends to go into designing something for them for the entire project and then, when they price it out, they can break it out into phases. “So, it could be a two- or three-year phasing project,” she said.

DeMeyer said a recent client has a home that was built in the 1930s, with very small rooms and hallways. Although the old Cape-style charm and feel is appealing in its own way, this client, and many other clients, want to open up the floorplan in their home, so they can have that open, airy feeling that people prefer today.

Speaking of what people want today, DeMeyer said the days of the “car wash” – those cool-looking, multi-headed showers that were all the rage for a while – are now gone. Clients still want roomy showers, but prefer the large rain showerheads, or hand-held showerheads which are preferable to use, especially if you’re caring for an elderly person who needs help with bathing.

A lot of people are doing away with the shower-tub combo, as well, she said. “The Jacuzzi tub days are pretty much gone,” said DeMeyer. “People who have a large master bath are buying stand-alone tubs.”

At Encore Construction, “We can be trusted. We’re very much about communication with the client,” DeMeyer added. “We use the software that helps us to that, be it taking pictures, putting the schedule online, doing any change orders and billing online. It’s very user-friendly. Most of our customers don’t live here during the construction process, so having that communication works really well.”
