Provincetown is rich in so many ways – in its food, in the arts and, of course, in its wonderful LGBTQ community. But it’s also rich in history and, as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we are reminded that, in 1620, the Pilgrims first landed in Provincetown Harbor. This tiny community witnessed the birth of what would, one day, become the United States of America.
Provincetown might not be the first place you think of visiting during the Thanksgiving season, but you’d be happily surprised at all it has to offer in the month of November! From turkey trots and theme weekends to the annual lighting of the Pilgrim Monument (not to mention some incredible deals on off-season accommodations), Provincetown should definitely be given another look this month. Here are just a few examples of the fun and unique celebrations you can expect.
Men’s Weekend takes place this year From Nov. 9 through 11, and includes all kinds of fun, including a Meet and Eat buffet reception, a 70s disco night, a bay-side brunch and so much more. Previously known as Single Men’s and Meet Your Man weekends, Men’s Weekend is a culmination of both, and there is no cover charge for any event. Visit here for more information.
Get those chaps ready, because Nov. 16 through 18 is Mr. New England Leather Weekend! This event includes a welcome dinner, a contestant meet and greet, a next-day brunch, as well as a dessert and coffee social. The Mr. New England Leather Competition itself will take place at the Paramount Nightclub, followed by an after-party! Contest rules and application can be found here. The winner will represent the leather community of New England for one year, compete at International Mister Leather, participate in a minimum of three charitable events in at least three different New England states! The annual lighting of the Provincetown Monument is a beloved town tradition, taking place on Nov. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Celebrate as they “throw the switch” and commemorate the Pilgrim’s First Landing in the New World in November of 1620. Refreshments will be provided by the Provincetown Stop and Shop and Bayside Betsy’s, and entertainment will be provided by Gerald Goode and Chris Racine. Hundreds of people attend this beautiful event, where 3,100 “landing lights” will light up the monument.
On Thanksgiving Day, arise bright and early to join in the eighth annual 5K Pilgrim Trot! Please bring a protein-packed canned good to be donated to the Provincetown Soup Kitchen. All proceeds from the Trot will go to benefit HOW (Helping Our Women). Cash prizes of $100 will go to the first male and female finishers. Visit here to register.
The Lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree is another fun, annual holiday tradition in Provincetown. A unique lobster pot tree is built at the beginning of each holiday season in the heart of Lopes’ Square, with over 100 real lobster pots, borrowed from local lobstermen. The lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. This is a great family event, which delights visitors and neighbors of all ages.
The much-anticipated Provincetown annual LGBTQ Holly Folly holiday festival runs from Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. Enjoy special sales and discounts in our one of a kind shops, holiday menus and special events at local restaurants and cultural venues, and lodging at your favorite Inn, B&B and hotel during this fabulous, not-to-be-missed weekend! And don’t forget to be there for the Jingle Bell Run and Champagne Brunch on Dec. 1.
