VIDEO – Woman dead, firefighter injured in raging 2-alarm fire in Monument Beach section of Bourne

BOURNE – A woman died in a 2-alarm fire in the Monument Beach section of Bourne Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out in a home on Alona Avenue just before 4 p.m. The location is just 100 yards from a closed on-call fire station. The home was fully engulfed with firefighters from the Pocasset station.

Deputy Fire Chief Joe Cararra said a second alarm was struck to deal with the close exposure to surrounding homes. He confirmed one person was found dead inside the home. No names were initially released by public safety officials.

The intensity of the fire also comprised the safety of the structure.

Cararra said said it was a tough area for crews because the streets in the neighborhood are very narrow.

They also vented a nearby house that experienced a smoke condition from the fire.

The State Fire Marshal’s office was on scene as part of the investigation.

Bourne Firefighters reported their crews faced heavy smoke and fire upon arrival and the on scene officer quickly upgraded to a 2nd alarm. Firefighters were informed that someone was trapped on the second floor. While attempting to make a rescue, 1 firefighter was injured. He was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham for evaluation.
