WELLFLEET
– It was a wild scene on Route 6 in Wellfleet around midnight Saturday when two Wellfleet police cruisers on a traffic stop were struck. Wellfleet Police report that their officers had stopped a Toyota Sienna on Route 6 at 1600 Route 6 at 11:54 p.m. Around 11:59 p.m., as officers were conducting a field sobriety test on the operator of the Toyota, a northbound Hyundai Elantra sedan collided with a Ford Taurus cruiser at the scene pushing it into a Ford Explorer cruiser. The Hyundai ended up on its roof. The vehicles did not strike the officers on location or the operator who was completing field sobriety tests.

The operator of the Toyota Sienna, Kelley Tripp, 46, of West Roxbury, was placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol, child endangerment while operating under the influence of alcohol, marked lanes violation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Our reporter observed several young children from that van transferred to another vehicle.

The operator of the Hyundai sedan that struck the two Wellfleet police cruisers, Juan Fontanez, 33, of Providence, RI, was placed under arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.

Route 6 was closed for approximately three hours and traffic was re-routed on side roads as the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the crash. The Wellfleet Police department was assisted at the scene by the Eastham, Truro and Provincetown Police departments. The Barnstable County Sheriff’s office assisted with photos.
