BARNSTABLE – On Saturday, May 19, 2018, the Barnstable County Fire & Rescue Training Academy held graduation ceremonies at Cape Cod Community College for 34 firefighters sponsored by 7 Cape Cod fire departments.
Academy Director George Russell said, “I’d like to congratulate our graduates for putting forth the effort to complete the Firefighter I/II course over the past 16 weeks and over 200 hours of training. They have done a fine job and we wish them the best for a long and safe career in the Fire Service.”
After congratulating the graduates, Barnstable County Commissioner and Chairman Leo Cakounes said, “All of you are now alumni of this institution, but unlike other schools you have attended in the past, this one will continue to train as you progress in your firefighting career. I will seek your help to promote the institution of which you just graduated to aid the towns of Barnstable County to mold new firefighters and offer much needed continuing education and training. It is a tool just as important as new equipment, fire stations, and state-of-art fire engines. Training will always be the essential part of your continuing safety and professional development and we must pay it forward.”

The Academy’s comprehensive program trains recruits in the areas of basic fire suppression, SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), search and rescue, vehicle extrication, ladders, and hazardous materials, as well as several other subjects to assist them in their goal of becoming firefighters. Recruits learn all these skills and more from certified fire instructors who are also experienced firefighters.
