Barnstable Police arrest father and son for cocaine trafficking

(l-r) Vincent Gomes Sr. and Vincent Gomes Jr.

BARNSTABLE – Barnstable Police report that over the past several months, narcotics detectives have been investigating a father and son involved in a large scale cocaine distribution operation between New Bedford and Cape Cod. The targets of the investigation were Vincent Gomes Sr. (age 39) and Vincent Gomes Jr. (age 21). Both suspects are originally from the Cape but have been residing off Cape in New Bedford. During the investigation, Detectives learned that the suspects were traveling to the Cape on a daily basis to distribute large quantities of cocaine to numerous Cape Cod area users and dealers. The suspects would generally remain on Cape for several hours each day before returning to New Bedford.

The investigation involved several undercover purchases of cocaine and extensive physical and electronic surveillance of the operation. Tuesday, BPD detectives and members of the Bristol County Sheriffs Drug Unit (South Coast Anti Crime Team) followed both Gomes’ from their residence in New Bedford to the Cape. Upon arriving on the Cape, the suspects were stopped after pulling into a conservation area parking lot on Old Stage Road in West Barnstable. A subsequent search resulted in the seizure of approximately 25 grams of cocaine from Gomes Jr. Another 25 grams of cocaine that had been hidden in the woods adjacent to the parking area was located by a BPD K-9. Both suspects were arrested for Trafficking Cocaine and Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substance Act. Gomes Sr. was also charged with an additional count of Possession of Oxycodone for a small quantity of pills seized from their vehicle.

Following the arrests, BPD Detectives and Bristol Sheriffs Officers met with New Bedford PD Detectives and executed a search warrant at 110 Reynolds St, Apt 2, in New Bedford (Gomes’ residence). Detectives seized another 90 grams of uncut cocaine, numerous oxycodone pills, drug processing material (scales, bags, diluting agents), as well as a loaded 9mm pistol and a loaded 22 caliber revolver. The street value of the drugs seized was approximately $25,000. BPD Detectives later seized $10,000 cash in suspected drug proceeds from Gomes family members as they drove from New Bedford to Hyannis. Gomes Sr. will be facing additional drug and firearms charges in Bristol County.

Vincent Gomes (Sr.) is a well known drug trafficker from the Fresh Holes Rd area of Hyannis. Gomes was the subject of a 2005 BPD/DEA wiretap investigation. As a result of that investigation, Gomes was convicted of cocaine distribution charges and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

At the time of his arrest, Gomes Jr. was out on bail for a BPD case charging Trafficking Cocaine stemming from an arrest in August of 2016. Gomes Jr. has been indicted in Barnstable Superior Court on said charge.

Both father and son were arraigned in Barnstable District Court Wednesday. Vincent Gomes Jr.’s bail on his previous case was revoked and an additional bail of $10,000 was set regarding the new charges. Vincent Gomes Sr.’s bail was $5,000, which he posted in court Wednesday afternoon
