Barnstable Police charge Sandwich man with drug offenses

BARNSTABLE – Barnstable Police report that during the month of March and April 2017, Det. Dave Foley initiated a narcotics investigation targeting 22-year-old Mathew Butchard of Sandwich (right). The investigation revealed that Butchard was involved in the distribution of various types of drugs including diverted pharmaceuticals (Xanax), concentrated Cannabis (Dabs), and Psychedelic drugs such as Lysergic Acid (LSD) and Psilocybin mushrooms. The investigation included undercover purchases of LSD from Butchard and extensive surveillance over the course of several days.

On Wednesday, Barnstable Detectives followed Butchard from his address in Sandwich to an address in Sagamore Beach where Detectives observed Butchard engage in suspicious activity over the course of several hours. Butchard was picked up by a waiting vehicle in the area and was driven back towards the Mid-Cape area where a motor vehicle stop was affected on Butchard and two associates from Sandwich. The motor vehicle stop resulted in the seizure of approximately 100 individual dosage units of LSD from Butchard.

As a result, Butchard was placed under arrest for Possession of a Class B Substance with intent to distribute. Butchard was transported to the Barnstable Police Department where the investigation continued. Detectives determined that additional quantities of LSD, mushrooms, and concentrated cannabis would be found at Butchard’s Sandwich house as well as the residence in Sagamore Beach. A subsequent search of the addresses by Detectives resulted in the location and seizure of over 800 more dosage units/tabs of acid in Sagamore Beach. Approximately 10 ounces of mushrooms, 60 dosages of concentrated cannabis (dabs), and additional marijuana was located at the Sandwich residence. Other seized drug related evidence includes over two hundred dollars of US currency, a digital scale, and drug packaging paraphernalia.

Butchard was charged with Possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute (LSD), and two counts of Possession of a Class C substance with intent to Distribute (concentrated cannabis and mushrooms).

Butchard was arraigned in Barnstable District court yesterday was released on one hundred dollars bail.
