New details: Barnstable Police investigating incident at local convenience store

Ryan Dubee

HYANNIS – On Tuesday January 19, 2021 at approximately 10:36 p.m., the Barnstable Police Department was called to AJ Mart convenience store at 459 Main Street Hyannis for a report of two men fighting.

Upon arrival, Officer Daniel Ruth discovered that one of the men involved in the disturbance was the owner of AJ Mart. The store owner reported to Officer Ruth that a male suspect had come into the store, ripped the plastic barrier above the counter down and demanded money from the register. The store owner then confronted the suspect and chased him outside, where the suspect assaulted him and fled towards the west end of Main St.

Barnstable Police K9 handler Officer O’Melia and his K9 arrived on scene and tracked the suspect to a parking area in the west end of Main Street, however, they were not able to locate the suspect at that time.

The following day, Detective Sergeant John York received an anonymous tip as to the identity of the attempted robbery suspect. After investigative follow up by Officer Ruth and members of the Barnstable Detectives division, 36-year-old Sandwich resident Ryan Dubee was positively identified as the suspect in the AJ Mart attempted robbery and a warrant for his arrest was obtained.

Dubee was subsequently arrested in Hyannis by Officer Ruth and Barnstable Detectives at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday January 20th. He was charged with Attempt to Commit a Crime – Unarmed Robbery, Assault and Battery and Vandalizing Property. Dubee was arraigned in Barnstable District Court today and his bail was set at $1,000. His bail on a previous case was revoked and he is being held at the Barnstable County House of Correction.
