BCREPC to Participate in Falmouth Emergency Preparedness Event

FALMOUTH – September is National Preparedness Month and the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC) is pleased to announce its participation in the Falmouth Family Emergency Preparedness and Fire Prevention Fair. Hosted by the Falmouth Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), the Fair—which is free of charge—will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gus Canty Recreation Center, 790 Main Street in Falmouth.

BCREPC Coordinator Sean O’Brien says, “We appreciate the Town of Falmouth’s initiative in helping educate and inform its residents and visitors alike about the importance of emergency preparedness. The BCREPC is proud to participate in this very important event.”

Falmouth Fire Chief Mark Sullivan is also Falmouth’s Emergency Management Director. He says the purpose of the fair is to improve community preparedness. “We found during recent severe winter storms that many of our community members were unprepared. We want to do all we can to educate and increase their preparedness for the next time—because we know there will be a next time. We are very excited about offering this opportunity to introduce our residents to the many organizations and businesses who have something to offer before, during and after emergencies.”

Falmouth’s Assistant Emergency Management Director, Kim Strohm, is also the event organizer. She reports that there will be more than 50 fair participants providing information and instruction on a range of emergency preparedness topics. “Among many other things, our visitors can learn how to build an emergency supply kit, prepare elderly and disabled persons for sheltering, take care of pets during disasters, and how to determine if they live in a flood zone.”

Strohm notes that there are several activities for children including an outdoor “Touch A Truck” event with community and county emergency response vehicles on site. These will include fire trucks, a police cruiser and SWAT truck, an Emergency Command Center vehicle and a Coast Guard boat. In addition, entertainment will be provided by Harold the Ventriloquist and Friends as well as “Patches” the Talking Automated Fire Dog.

Popcorn, hot dogs and pizza will be available free of charge. In addition to the “Passport,” which encourages visitors to visit at least 15 booths to receive a free prize, there will also be several free raffle prizes. Eligible Falmouth residents can also sign up to have free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed in their homes by the Red Cross and Falmouth Fire Prevention Bureau.

Fair participants will include: MEMA, Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team, Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps, American Red Cross, Citizens Emergency Response Team, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Cape Cod Citizens Corps Council, Amateur Radio Emergency Service, BCREPC, VNA of Cape Cod, Marine Lodge, the National Weather Service, Oceanside Restoration and Falmouth Human Services.
