UPDATED: Driver dies after car collides head-on with large construction vehicle on Route 28 in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH
From Yarmouth Police: On Thursday, April 25, 2019 at approximately 2:47 PM, Yarmouth Police Officers and Firefighters responded to the area Route 28 and Townbrook Road in West Yarmouth for a report of a head on motor vehicle collision.

Patrol Officer Andrew Coville was first to arrive on scene and observed that a grey Honda CR-V had crossed over from the east bound lane of travel into the west bound lane and collided head on with a large construction vehicle.

A critically injured female driver was found in the driver’s seat of the heavily damaged Honda.

Additional Police Officers arrived, secured the area, and diverted traffic.

Yarmouth Firefighters arrived and extracted the woman from the vehicle, provided advanced emergency medical care, and transported her to Cape Cod Hospital.

The initial Crash Investigation found several witnesses. One reported observing the Honda CRV go up onto the curb in the east bound lane of travel near the area of Baker’s Square and side swipe a telephone pole. The vehicle then crossed into the west bound lane of travel as they both continued east on Route 28 and nearly collided with several oncoming vehicles. This witness reported the situation to 911 just seconds prior to the crash.

A second witness reported that he was directly in front of the large construction vehicle that was struck by the Honda CRV just prior to the collision. He stated that he saw the Honda CRV coming directly at him at a high rate of speed and he quickly accelerated his vehicle and moved out of the way. As he got out of the way, the 2008 Honda CRV collided head on with the 2017 GMC Gradall XL5100 Truck owned by Lawrence Lynch Corp of Falmouth.

Barnstable police arrived at the scene and reported that the Honda CRV had been involved in a rear end collision near Kappy’s Liquor’s in Barnstable a short time prior to the collision in Yarmouth occurring. Fortunately, no one was injured in that crash.

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit assisted in the investigation and both vehicles were removed from the scene by Mid Cape Collision.

Despite all efforts, the Yarmouth Police Department was notified later in the afternoon that the driver of the Honda, Cathy Flavin, age 70, of Yarmouthport was unable to survive and died at Cape Cod Hospital.

The crash investigation is active and ongoing. Initial accounts indicate some type of medical emergency may have been involved.

The Yarmouth Police and Fire Departments extend our deepest sympathies to the Lavin family.
