UPDATED: Fatal van vs motorcycle crash in Harwich

HARWICH
– On Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at approximately 12:10pm, an off-duty Harwich Firefighter radioed that he had just witnessed a car versus motorcycle crash at the intersection of Depot Street and Old Chatham Road. The off-duty Harwich Firefighter started CPR on the driver of the motorcycle and was soon joined by a Harwich Police Officer who was working a construction detail nearby as well as on-duty members of the HPD and HFD.

The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Charles Koehl, age 77 of South Yarmouth. Mr. Koehl was transported to Cape Cod Hospital via Harwich Ambulance but later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the van, identified as Fabricio Carvalho, age 41 of West Yarmouth, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a van had been traveling east on Old Chatham Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Depot Street. The van proceeded through the stop sign and struck the motorcycle as it traveled south on Depot Street. The force of the crash knocked the van onto its side and ejected the driver of the motorcycle.

The crash is under investigation by the Harwich Police and the Cape Cod Regional Crash Reconstruction Team
