Updated: Man drowns at Hathaway’s Pond in Barnstable

BARNSTABLE – A tier 2 regional dive team response was requested to Hathaway’s Pond off Phinney’s Lane in Barnstable. Shortly after 6 PM, a report came in of a possible drowning.

About 7:15 PM, the victim was located by divers, removed from the water and rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Further details were not immediately available.

Statement from Barnstable Fire: The Barnstable Fire Department responded Sunday evening at 6:09 PM for a report of a possible drowning at Hathaway’s Pond in Barnstable. Barnstable Ambulance 203 and Engine 202 responded to Hathaway’s Pond where the Barnstable Police were also on location. There were initially conflicting reports of the number of people missing and the possibility of the incident involving a raft of people, but rescuers were able to confirm one swimmer unaccounted for.

Barnstable Fire Department launched their 17-foot Boston Whaler, Marine 218 and requested additional resources from the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team: Dive Team. Members from Hyannis, Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills, Yarmouth, Orleans, Brewster, and the West Barnstable Fire Departments responded to the scene. The Barnstable Harbor Master’s Office and Barnstable Police also assisted in the search. A male in his mid-30’s was pulled from the water at Hathaway’s Pond and transported to Cape Cod Hospital by a mutual aid ambulance from West Barnstable. The incident is being investigated by the Barnstable Police Department.

Statement fron Barnstable Police: On Sunday, August 9th, at approximately 6:07 p.m. the Barnstable Police Department responded to Hathaway’s Pond for a report of a missing swimmer / possible drowning. The on-scene investigation revealed that a swimmer had waded out beyond the swimming area and then went under. The swimmer was alone at the time that he went under. The missing swimmer was located in approximately 20 feet of water by rescue divers and transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced deceased approximately 90 minutes after the initial call for help.

The name of the swimmer is being withheld pending identification confirmation and family notification. He was a male in his early thirties from Connecticut. The investigation is being handled by State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.
