Gas leak closes Route 6A in East Dennis

EAST DENNIS – Work crews from the Dennis Water District struck a gas main at 9:59 a.m. while attempting to fix a water leak at the corner of Cedar Hill Road and Route 6A. When the fire and police personnel arrived a heavy volume of both natural gas and water was spouting from the hole.

National Grid personnel arrived on scene at 10:27 a.m. but needed time to locate shutoff valves along the highway. They secured the leak at 12.55 p.m. The Dennis Department of Public Works supplied barricades to assist the Dennis police in diverting traffic around the affected area. There were no reported injuries but some houses were evacuated as a precaution. Route 6A was closed in both directions until the repair was completed.
