NEW DETAILS: Driver who fled Sagamore Bridge crash captured; victims were off duty trooper and spouse

BOURNE – Officials were called to a reported head-on crash on the Cape side of the Sagamore Bridge. The report came in just before 8 PM. Traffic cam images showed traffic at a standstill. One person was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. State Police are investigating the crash.

On Wednesday afternoon State Police released the following statement: At approximately 8:10 p.m. yesterday Massachusetts State Troopers responded to a head-on hit-and-run crash on the Sagamore Bridge, Route 6 east, in Bourne. The investigation indicated that a 1999 Toyota coupe crossed the center line and struck a 2017 Volkswagen Passat heading in the opposite direction and occupied by an off-duty Massachusetts State Police officer and his wife. The operator of the Toyota then fled the scene by exiting his own vehicle and jumping into the back of a passing landscaping truck.

The female victim, the passenger in the Passat, was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Plymouth for minor injuries. She was treated and later released.

As a result of a subsequent investigation, we identified the operator of the Toyota as Gregory B. May, 35, of Duxbury. At 10:35 a.m. today, Troopers from State Police-Bourne and the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section located May at a relative’s home in Bourne and placed him under arrest. He was brought to the Bourne barracks and booked and will be arraigned this afternoon in Falmouth District Court for charges related to causing the crash and leaving the scene.
