Man rescued by Coast Guard helo after boat flips near Chatham Bar

CHATHAM – A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter hoisted a man to safety who was tossed from his boat late Tuesday afternoon when it capsized off Chatham.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll said the 20-foot vessel ran into trouble just in front of the Chatham bar.

The Chatham Harbormaster was first to respond to the scene and make contact with the man who was able to swim onto a nearby sandbar.

Groll said the water temperature at the time of the capsizing was 45 degrees.

The Coast Guard helicopter was returning from a training mission off Long Island and diverted to Chatham to make the rescue. The unidentified man was reportedly not injured and was flown to Air Station Cape Cod.

Groll said the boat remained adrift and a notice to mariners was issued to be aware of the vessel.

She said the incident could have been much worse considering the cold water temperatures and noted the importance of mariners have all their safety equipment on board.
