New details: Mashpee ambulance rolls over in multi-vehicle crash

FALMOUTH – A Mashpee ambulance was involved in a multi-vehicle crash which left the ambulance rolled over on its side. The crash happened on Nathan Ellis Highway (Route 151) at Ranch Road about 5:30 PM Friday. The ambulance was reportedly transporting a patient to Falmouth Hospital. Falmouth Fire officials issued a level 1 Mass Casualty Incident to bring ambulances to the scene. It was not believed there were any life-threatening injuries.

Statement from Falmouth Fire: At approximately 5:33 PM Friday, FFRD units were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Route 151 involving a Mashpee Fire Department ambulance. Falmouth FD A35 arrived to find a 3 vehicle collision, with the Mashpee ambulance on its side. The Mashpee ambulance was transporting a patient to Falmouth Hospital at the time of the collision. A total of 6 injured persons were evaluated, with 4 patients eventually being transported to local hospitals, fortunately all with non-life threatening injuries.

Ambulances from the Bourne, Sandwich, Cotuit and COMM FD’s all assisted at the scene. The crash is being investigated by the Falmouth Police.

Statement from Falmouth Police: On 08/09/19, at approximately 5:30 PM, Falmouth Dispatch received numerous calls regarding a crash on Rt. 151, near Ranch Rd. It was further reported that the crash involved a Mashpee Fire Rescue Department ambulance.

Four people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Among the injured were two Mashpee paramedics and a patient in the ambulance. All of the vehicles sustained heavy damage and were eventually towed from the scene.

The crash is being investigated by the Falmouth Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office. The crash remains under investigation, however, the preliminary analyses indicates the following. The Mashpee ambulance was traveling westerly on Rt. 151 with its emergency lights and siren on. There was a patient and a paramedic in the rear of the ambulance. A Toyota Camry was heading easterly on Rt. 151 and was occupied by the driver and one passenger. As vehicles in both lanes slowed and pulled over for the ambulance, the Camry crossed over the center line and struck the ambulance. The impact caused the ambulance to veer to the left and into the eastbound lane where it hit a Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on before coming to rest on its driver’s side.

The Mashpee PD, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Falmouth FD, Mashpee FD, Bourne FD, Sandwich FD and Cotuit / Osterville / Marstons Mills FD all assisted at the scene.
