New details: Hyannis man in custody after alleged crime spree including hit and run on pedestrian with serious injuries in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police report that on Friday, July 30, 2021, at approximately 5:25 PM, they responded to Hoover Road in West Yarmouth for a reported disturbance in progress. While enroute Officers were advised that an individual involved in the disturbance may have been hit by a motor vehicle. Officers Mellett and Brule arrived and located a male laying on the road with severe lower body injuries. Officers quickly learned that the suspect, later identified as Matthew Amick age 30 from Hyannis, had fled the scene and struck the victim in the process of fleeing. It was learned that Amick had also thrown a shovel through the front window of the residence and slashed two victims with a box cutter type instrument during the initial disturbance.

Amick fled the Hoover Road address (Black Chevy Silverado pickup above) and traveled south on Willow Street into Hyannis. While fleeing, Amick struck a motor vehicle at the intersection of Camp Street and Willow Street (Ford Explorer below) and fled the crash scene without stopping. Officers immediately began searching the area and located Amick’s vehicle at a business on Willow Street.

A short time later, Amick was located at his address on Spring Street in Hyannis. Amick was locted hiding in a crawl space in the basment of the home. Officers used descalation tactics and successfully negotiated Amick out of the crawl space and into custody.
One of the victims was treated on scene and refused transport to the hospital. The second victim (pedestrian) was transported to a Boston Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The victim is a 63 year old male from Yarmouth.

The incident remains under under investigation by the Yarmouth Police Detective Division. The Yarmouth Police Department was assisted by the Barnstable Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and the Yarmouth Fire Department. The Yarmouth Police Department commends all of the public safety personnel involved for the excellent work on this very complex and dangerous incident.
