VIDEO: Harwich Police sweep Cape Tech after rumor circulates on bus

HARWICH
– Harwich Police were called to the Cape Cod Tech school in Harwich Monday morning.

According to reports, buses were being diverted to the nearby commuter lot after a rumor on a bus that something was happening in the building.

Superintendent Robert Sanborn said they had Harwich officers sweep the building and nothing was found. Students and staff were eventually allowed inside.

Today’s incident comes after school officials and police investigated a non-credible rumor last week. The student involved in that incident has been excluded from school while a mental health evaluation is conducted.

Sanborn said they took action today out of an abundance of caution.

Harwich Police issued the following statement Monday morning: “This morning at approximately 6:45 AM the Harwich Police Department received information from a bus company official that there was talk on one of the buses of an imminent threat at the Tech School. Harwich Police responded to the school immediately and contacted school officials. A very small number of students and staff were already in the building. Out of an abundance of caution the building was evacuated and swept by Harwich police personnel. Arriving students and staff were diverted to staging areas away from school grounds while the building was being cleared.

After speaking with the students on the bus in question as well as the bus driver it was determined that no credible threat existed. The building was first evacuated at 7:10 AM and the incident was resolved fully by 8:15 AM. Students and staff were than allowed to enter the building and begin the school day.

Harwich Police were assisted by members of the Harwich Fire Department and Brewster Police Department.”
