West Barnstable FD responds to reports of smoky package at WB Post Office

WEST BARNSTABLE – Firefighters responded to the West Barnstable Post Office Monday for reports of smoke in the building coming from a package.

All postal employees and customers safely evacuated the building on Route 6A and firefighters reported no readings of any hazardous materials in the building.

Barnstable Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said the smoke came from a package of so-called “strike anywhere” matches that someone had purchased for a camping trip. The matches apparently came in contact with the inside of the package and caused the package to smoke.

The smoke was ventilated from the building and postal Inspectors are investigating the incident.

The package was properly labeled and it was legal to mail.
