BOURNE
– Bourne Police report that at approximately 5:23 p.m. Friday they received multiple reports of a two-vehicle head-on crash on the Scenic Highway (Route 6), east of the Bourne Scenic Park entrance. Responding officers from Bourne PD and MA State Police located the crash in the eastbound lane. Officers reported serious injuries on location and requested ambulances. Bourne Fire & Rescue arrived on location and declared a Mass Casualty Incident and called for the Jaws of Life to aid in extricating victims.

The preliminary investigation by officers found that a gray Toyota Camry occupied by 5 males, all under 21 years old, from Sandwich, MA, was traveling westbound on the Scenic Highway at a speed too great for the snowy, wet conditions. The operator of the Camry lost control of the vehicle after rounding a bend in the highway. The Camry crossed the center line and drove head-on into a gray Toyota Corolla that was traveling in the opposite direction. The operator of the Corolla, a 34-year-old male from Marshfield, MA, was the Corolla’s only occupant.

One of the injured passengers from the Camry had fled the crash scene prior to officers arriving. He was later located in a nearby housing development and transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The remaining four occupants of the Camry and the operator of the Corolla were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries that were not life threatening. Two were transported to area trauma hospitals in Providence and Weymouth. It appears speed, alcohol and weather were all contributing factors to the crash. The highway was reduced to a single lane of traffic for approximately one hour while first responders and tow trucks cleared the scene.

All five occupants of the Camry will be charged with Minor in Possession of Alcohol and Possessing an Open Container of Alcohol in a Vehicle. In addition, the 18-year-old driver of the Camry will be charged with OUI, Negligent Operation, Minor Transporting Alcohol, Fail to Stay Within Marked Lanes, and Speeding.
