SAGAMORE BEACH – Bourne Fire reports that at 7:03 PM on Thursday, they were dispatched to a possible fire in an oil burner at 37 Noreast Drive in Sagamore Beach. At the time, the crews from the two closest stations were committed to previous emergency calls, so the first engine responded from Pocasset. The first Bourne Fire Department personnel, the Deputy Chief, arrived within 4 minutes of the time of the call. He found light smoke, with no obvious fire, showing from the residence and requested additional staff and apparatus to the scene.

At 7:33 PM, while the first crew was searching for the fire in the basement, conditions worsened and the crew became trapped. With heavy fire, high temperatures and no visibility, the crew called for a mayday, requesting assistance in exiting the building. At the time, a second alarm assignment was requested, bringing additional manpower and apparatus. The crew requesting the mayday was able to safely self-evacuate the building in under four minutes, all fire department personnel were accounted for, and there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The fire was declared under control at 8:24 PM, and crews remained on location until 10:57 PM, wetting down hot spots. One civilian was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth with injuries that were not life-threatening, and there were no injuries to any fire service personnel. The fire remains under investigation by the Bourne Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit.

The Bourne Fire Department would like to thank the Bourne Police Department, the Falmouth Fire Department, the Joint Base Cape Cod Fire Department, the Onset Fire Department, the Plymouth Fire Department, the Sandwich Fire Department, Wareham Emergency Medical Services, the American Red Cross of the Cape & Islands and the Special Operations Unit of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for their assistance both on scene and for covering the town during the fire.
