Updated: Pedestrians killed in Sandwich identified

SANDWICHUpdate: On Monday, Sandwich Police and Sandwich Fire Department responded to Route 6A and Merchant Road for the report of two pedestrians struck by a minivan. The minivan, a 2001 Honda Odyssey, was operated by a 54-year-old male from Marlborough MA. Both victims were unresponsive upon the arrival of emergency personnel, and CPR was started on the victims. Both Victims were transported to Cape Cod Hospital.

Sandwich Police learned later that afternoon that both victims, 87-year-old Shirley McCarthy of Sandwich and 69-year-old Evelyn Furlong of Sandwich, had succumbed to their injuries. The names of the victims had been withheld at that time pending notification to the families.

The investigation is currently ongoing. Due to the nature of the investigation, as well as the potential of criminal charges, the name of the driver is not being released.

Previous story: Two pedestrians were struck killed in Sandwich just after 1:30 PM. The incident happened on Old Kings Highway (Route 6A) at Merchants Road.

Reports from the scene indicate rescuers were performing CPR on both victims before rushing them to a hospital where Sandwich Police confirm they were both pronounced dead. Police report they were 87 and 69 years old. Their identities are being withheld until the next of kin are advised. The driver of the Honda Odyssey minivan, a 54-year-old male from Marlborough was also later taken to the hospital.

Sandwich Police requested the Mass State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS) to the scene to investigate.

Route 6A was closed between Tupper Road and Town Neck Road. The intersection where the crash happened is the entrance to Stop & Shop and has a stop light.
