Brighton men face drug, motor vehicle charges after traffic stop in Hyannis

Barnstable Police/CWN

HYANNISFrom Barnstable Police: On Tuesday, May 21st at about 11:00 PM, Officer Joe Green stopped a black 2009 Ford Expedition for a civil motor vehicle infraction on Airport Rd. in Hyannis. During the stop the male operator, who was later identified as 36-year-old Clifford Ostane of Brighton, refused to produce a driver’s license or otherwise identify himself to police. As Officer Green attempted to interact with Ostane, a male passenger later identified as 21-year-old Kenneth Providence, also of Brighton, video-taped the encounter on his cell phone and repeatedly interfered with Officer Green’s ability to converse with Ostane. Ostane’s refusal to identify himself led to his arrest and upon the arrival of backup officers, Ostane was handcuffed and seated in a police cruiser. The officers then turned their attention to Providence who interfered with their efforts to conduct the traffic stop. When officers attempted to take Providence into custody he transitioned from being non-compliant to being physically assaultive towards officers. In an attempt to evade arrest, Providence secreted himself beneath the stopped vehicle and clung to the undercarriage refusing to submit to officers instructions. After several attempts to coax him out, and Providence biting, kicking and grabbing the taser of an officer, Providence was physically removed from under the car. Providence was also taken into custody and seated in a police cruiser. During the stop and investigation, a quantity of narcotics was discovered in their possession.

Ostane was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a defective tail light, resisting/obstructing arrest, failure to produce a driver’s license to police, operating with a revoked license (subsequent offense) and possession of a class B substance with intent to distribute. Providence was charged with interfering with a police officer, resisting/obstructing arrest, 3 counts of assault & battery on a police officer, disarming a police officer, and possession of a class B substance with intent to distribute. Both subjects were held overnight at the Barnstable Police station and transported this morning to Barnstable District Court for arraignment.
