New details: Male shot in Dennis, suspect reportedly in custody

DENNIS – A shooting was reported in front of Finley’s Liquors on Route 28 in Dennis about 3 PM.

The male victim was rushed to Barnstable Municipal Airport to meet a MedFlight helicopter.

Several police agencies chased a suspect on a dirtbike onto Route 6 and then back into Dennis and possibly Harwich.

According to public safety broadcasts, police are looking for a grey Chrysler sedan.

Shortly after 5:30 PM, there were reports the suspect was in custody.

Statement from Mass State Police: At approximately 3:10 p.m. today a shooting occurred at Finley’s Liquors on Route 28 in West Dennis. Preliminary information indicates that the shooting was non-fatal as of this time.

Several minutes later Dennis Police engaged in a pursuit of a potential suspect, who was operating a motorcycle. An MSP cruiser assumed a secondary role in the pursuit on Route 6 westbound in the Dennis/Yarmouth area as Troop D Headquarters assumed command and control.

A short time later the fleeing suspect made a U-turn in the median strip and continued to flee on Route 6 eastbound, at which point the MSP cruiser assumed the primary role in the pursuit.

The suspect took Exit 9 onto Route 134 southbound, where pursuing cruisers lost sight of him.

Several MSP units — State Police-Yarmouth, State Police Crime Scene Services, and the Cape and Islands State Police Detective Unit — along with Dennis Police continue to investigate the shooting and the follow-up on the pursuit.

Statement from Dennis Police: Today, August 30, 2019, at 3:06 pm the Dennis Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a subject had been shot in the parking lot of Finleys Liquors, 309 Route 28, West Dennis. The first arriving officers found a subject who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported by the Dennis Fire Department Rescue to Barnstable Municipal Airport where he was taken by medflight helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

An investigation identified a suspect in the shooting, who was taken into custody by Dennis Police Department Detectives shortly after 5 PM.

While police units were responding to the shooting at Finley’s Liquors, units from the Dennis Police Department and Massachusetts State Police began pursuit of a male subject operating a dirt bike that was thought to possibly be involved with the shooting. The pursuit traveled from Dennis, into Harwich, onto Route 6 westbound, when the suspect reversed direction to eastbound, getting off Route 6 at Exit 9A and onto Route 134 south. The dirt bike was lost in traffic, but ultimately located abandoned and taken into police custody. Although there is no confirmed connection between the subject operating the dirt bike and the shooting, the Dennis Police Department is seeking to identify the operator and question him as he would be subject to serious motor vehicle charges.

The Dennis Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and Criminal Investigations Officers from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
