UPDATED: Cab driver trapped under cab, then struck by a pickup that left scene

FALMOUTH
– Falmouth Police report that earlier this morning a cab driver attempted to stop his cab from rolling away, slipped and became partially trapped under the cab. Another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction then drove over his legs.

Around 6 AM on Monday, a Falmouth Taxi cab driver James Sawyer, 80, of East Falmouth stopped in the area of 352 Sippewissett Road to check a pickup address. After exiting the cab he realized he accidentally left the cab in reverse as it rolled away. When he attempted to stop his cab from rolling away, he slipped and became partially trapped under the cab. At this point the cab was located in the northbound lane of Sippewissett Road with the Sawyer’s torso trapped under the cab and his legs protruding into the southbound lane.

Sawyer then called another cab driver for assistance. While waiting for assistance, another vehicle traveling southbound drove over his legs.

The second vehicle was described as a dark colored 2000-2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup with possible front end damage.

Sawyer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Falmouth Hospital. Later, he was sent via MedFlight to Boston Medical Center.

Falmouth Police are still actively looking for the pickup truck. The operator is a person of interest. He/she may have not known he/she ran over the cab driver’s legs. Nonetheless, we would like to speak with the operator.

The incident remains under investigation.
