PROVINCETOWN
– Provincetown Police report that on Thursday at approximately 5:32 p.m., they received a phone call stating that there were two horse riders on the beach off of Commercial Street and that one of the horses had run from its rider. Multiple 911 calls immediately followed stating that the horse was galloping the wrong way on Commercial Street. The United States Coast Guard subsequently reported a motor vehicle collision just outside their station.

Upon arrival of police officers, it was reported that the horse had galloped into the moving Volkswagen Jetta sedan on Commercial Street shattering the windshield of the vehicle. Animal Control Officer Ruth Ann Cowing arrived on scene shortly thereafter and restrained the horse on Franklin Street. One of the two vehicle occupants sustained minor injuries and was provided first aid by the responding rescue crew. The vehicle was later towed from the scene.

The horse was walked back to its stable by the riders where it was evaluated by a veterinarian. It was subsequently euthanized due to the injuries sustained in the collision. It was later determined the rider was ejected from the horse when the saddle slid off the animal. The rider sustained no reported injuries.
