HARWICH – A 7-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon in Harwich in what’s being called a “tragic accident” by law enforcement.
The horrific scene unfolded Saturday afternoon shortly after 3 PM.
According to reports, the child, identified by officials at the Stony Brook Elementary School in Brewster as Damien Larsen, was apparently struck by a skid steerat a house on Main Street Extension.
Counselors were expected to be on hand Monday at the school for students and staff.
The following statement was issued to Cape Wide News Saturday night by State Police:
“MSP detectives from Cape and Island DA’s office this afternoon responded to the fatality of a male child at a home in Harwich. The child was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Evidence suggests the death was a tragic accident.”
Bystanders were reportedly performing CPR before the child was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Multiple Harwich and State investigators were on the scene.
Statement from Harwich Fire: “At approximately 3:15 on Saturday afternoon a 911 call was received at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s office reporting a child had been struck by a skid steer at 106 Main Street North Harwich. Harwich Fire along with the Harwich Police responded.
First arriving firefighters and police officers found a child that had been stuck by a small skid steer loader and had suffered critical injuries. Firefighters, assisted by Harwich Police, immediately treated and loaded the patient into the ambulance for transport to Cape Cod Hospital. The child did not survive.
The accident is under investigation by the Harwich Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
