ORLEANS – A child and his mother had to be dug out after the child was reportedly buried up to his neck in sand at Nauset Beach in Orleans. The incident happened sometime after 5 PM Friday evening. Rescuers were able dig the child out and he was evaluated at the scene.
Orleans Fire-Rescue tells Cape Wide News that they were dispatched at 5:05 PM on friday for two people trapped in the sand at Nauset Beach. The location of the victims was on a remote area of Nauset Beach, north of the Over-Sand Vehicle Residents beach.
Orleans Fire Department EMTs stationed at Nauset Beach arrived approximately 7 minutes after the initial call. On arrival, a teenage male and female in her 40s were trapped in the sand. They were in an approximately 6-foot-deep hole, the male was buried up to his mid torso and the woman to her waist.
Additional Fire Department personnel, as well Orleans Natural Resources personnel worked efficiently to safely remove the two people at about 5:30 p.m.
Both parties were evaluated by Orleans Fire Department paramedics and declined transport to the hospital.
Fire Chief Geof Deering said: “Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in today’s incident, but this situation highlights the dangers of digging in the sand. Digging in the beach sand is an innocent exercise, but the potential for danger is real. Today’s lesson is reminder to never dig holes beyond the knee height of the smallest person in a beach going group.”
