Coast Guard medevacs two from Nantucket in separate incidents

NANTUCKET – The Coast Guard flew a 5-year-old girl from Nantucket Cottage Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital Saturday, after she sustained an injury to her arm.

At about 4 p.m., Nantucket Cottage Hospital contacted watchstanders at the First Coast Guard District stating that MedFlight was unable to fly due to unsafe weather conditions.

Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter at about 4:45 p.m. The air crew arrived at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and brought the girl to the Massachusetts General Hospital for advanced medical care.

The girl was reported to be in stable condition.

The Coast Guard then flew a 66-year-old man suffering from chest pains from Nantucket Cottage Hospital to Cape Cod Hospital, about 2 hours later on Saturday evening.

At about 6:15 p.m., the hospital in Nantucket contacted watchstanders at the First Coast Guard District requesting assistance.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, still in the air from the previous mission, arrived in Nantucket and brought the man and a nurse to Cape Cod Hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition.
